What Are The Side Effects And Remedy Of Excess Consumption Of Bourbon ?

Once or twice a year, I will drink bourbon with a friend of mine (to excess). On these occasions, I wake to a slightly sore roof of the mouth. Bearable, but uncomfortable. However, I am unable to eat even soft foods because the pain is so great that it makes my eyes water. I can drink cool, non-carbonated liquids - water being the favorite. Everything else is painful. This lasts for three-or-so days and then abates. What is the problem? Is there a way to relieve it more quickly?

Addiction Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms appear to be due to the irritant action of alcohol on the mucosal lining of the gastro-intestinal tract. Alcohol also increases the acid production in the stomach and reflux of acid into the food pipe. This also makes the roof of mouth sore. You will find that taking antacids will reduce the pain. B complex vitamin supplements may also help. But the best solution would be to drink within limit.

Best wishes.
