Augmentin is an antibacterial combination amoxicillin and the β-lactamase inhibitor, clavulanic acid. Augmentin is contraindicated in patients with a history of allergic reactions to any penicillin. Augmentin possesses the characteristic low toxicity of the penicillin group of antibiotics. Augmentin is generally well tolerated. The majority of side effects are mild and transient in nature. Common side effects include diarrhea/loose stools, nausea, skin rashes and urticaria, vomiting and vaginitis. The overall incidence of side effects, and in particular diarrhea, increased with the higher recommended dose.
