What Are The Long Term Side Effects Of Finasteride?

My son is turning 21 in 4 months. He just started this week taking Finasteride. His Doctor told him the side effects and told him if he has them to stop the medication. He told him once he stops it he will return back to normal. I am concerned with the possible side effects since this medication is something he may take for a long time. I am very concerned. I would rather have him lose hair than have lasting problems

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related doubts

Finazteride is 5 alpha reductase inhibitor drug. The enzyme is involved in testosterone metabolic pathway. A lot of individuals suffer side effects like loss of libido, reduced erection or impotence, ejaculation disorder while on this medicine. The side effects are reversible so no need to worry, but its not advisable to give this drug to a young unmarried male. The drugs helps in reducing hair fall but this side effect limits its use. Discuss with his doctor for some other drug like Minoxidil which is relatively safer.

Thanks, Take care
