What Are The Long Term Effects Of Hysterectomy?

I am going to have a hysterectomy but my ovaries are going to be left in tact. What are the long term effects that I will be experiencing? Will I gain weight around my belly? Will my periods stop? Is it true that I might get dementia from having this done?

Hello and welcome to HCM,
I am Dr Nilajkumar a consultant gynecologist and I will be helping you in your queries.

I understand all your queries. Please do not think so much.
They are going to keep the ovaries which are the main link in the female hormonal axis.
The only function of the uterus is to keep producing the uterine lining for pregnancy to occur. So after removing the uterus there will be no periods and you cannot become pregnant again.
Weight gain depends upon you, if you eat a lot and do not exercise you will gain weight just as in every normal person, there is no relation to uterus.
The ovaries are the main hormone producing part. So you will have your hormones, no effect on bones, no effect on sex drive etc.
Hysterectomy with only removal of uterus alone does not cause dementia. Even with removal of ovaries, dementia is not seen in every woman.

So the only function that vanishes is menstruation and child bearing. Nothing else changes.
So do not worry. Discuss this with your doctor in details before undergoing the procedure so that all doubts are done away with and you will do well.

Hope this was helpful.
Feel free to ask any further queries and I will be happy to help.
Thanks for using HCM.
Have a good day.
