My Dad had a big stroke last Thursday on the left side of his brain which affected his right side. He was getting better with his memory until this past Saturday. On Sunday he didn t seem very alert at all, didn t want to try to communicate, and didn t act like he remembered us. The nurse said it could be after stroke shock . Is there such a thing and what are the effects, please? Thank you.
I read your question and I understand your concern.
I have not heard of a term like after strokeshock, I suppose she tried to put it in simple terms for you. In the first 7-10 days after a stroke the situation could seem to aggravate for several reasons. The most common ones are:
-Swelling of the brain. After the stroke a swelling process begins which lasts several days which raises the pressure on the brain -A hemorrhage in the infarcted area. When blood flow is restored to that area with dead cells, the vessel walls can rupture with bleeding and raised pressure on the brain -Another stroke can happen especially during the first days, the risk depends on the cause of the first stroke. I guess any of the above might have been what she meant by that term. Also other medical issues like infections, dysfunctioning of other organs can limit the patients response as well.
I hope to have been of help.
