What Are The Dark Areas Around My Teeth?

My dentist found a couple of areas that showed dark around a couple of my teeth and suspicious areas around the mandible. He sent me to an oral surgeon and he said I would need a CT scan as the X-Ray does not give them enough information. Is this an unusual occurrence? YYYY@YYYY
Thanks,
Frances Stein
