What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission Through Needle Stick Injuries?

Yes you may help. I'm an MA student. We have been pricking fingers today. Today, I pricked a finger and then after I took my glove off, I picked up the other student's lancet without gloves on the handle. There was no blood on the handle at all.. Am I at risk for HIV? Perhaps I am just being paranoid.

Infectious Diseases Specialist 's  Response
Hello ,

I understand your concern.

I am Dr. Arun Tank, infectious disease specialist, answering your concern.

There is very nil chance of infection.

HIV virus never survives more than half hour on atmosphere.

As this lancet is there on the atmosphere without blood stain on it. There is very very low chance of infection in it.

Even if it contains the blood it has only 1% chance of getting HIV infection. AS it is free of blood it wont cause HIV.

I will be happy to answer your further concern you can contact me here or you can contact me on bit.ly/DrArun
We wish you a best health at healthcare magic.

Infectious Diseases Specialist Dr. Sheetal Verma's  Response
Thanks for your query at HCM!
No according to me there is no direct contact of blood. So I see no chance or risk of any transmission of HIV.
With needle prick of even HIV positive chance is 1 in 500 to get infected.
Do you know the HIV status of that person?
But if it bothers you too much you can get prophylaxis an testing done for p24 antigen test available at hospital nearby.
Relax don't worry.
Take care!
