What Are The Causes For Having Itching And Burning In Hands?

My 87 year old Mom's hands are so itchy and burning. We gave her benadryl. This has been going on for almost 10 days.. She was using a patch for pain that was changed every 3 days. We cut that out after 3 weeks. Ruled out food alergy.
Any ideas??? Thank you

Dermatologist 's  Response

Hi,

I can understand your concern for red spot with white spot in middle which is not clearing after applying creams.

There can be multiple possibility and its too early to reach to a diagnosis. But as per description it appears to be Allergic contact dermatitis: In this condition there are eruptions along with moderate itching and in more aggravated cases there is appearance of more redness.

In this condition a thorough history of contact allergens are to be taken and accordingly a specific diagnostic technique known as patch test is to be undertaken.

The only precaution you must follow is not to touch, pinch pop or squeeze any of them other wise it can get infected and can cause complications.

You can apply medium potency steroid cream application such as mometasone or fluticasone cream. You can take antihistamine benadryl or loratadine by mouth.

If it is increasing then can take further guidance from a dermatologist.

Take care.
