Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Are Long Term Effects Of Abusing Methamphetamine?
I have been a rather normal user of methamphetamine for the last 21 years. I did stop using during my pregnancies and have had breaks that range anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Since 2007, I have had a break of 5 months all other breaks from using have been less than 3 weeks. I have been diagnosed with depression in the past and it runs in my family (my mother being on anti depressants for many years - Elavil and my uncle who committed suicide in his mid 50's). I have not been fully diagnosed (I don't keep going for check ups) but in 2005 my doctor has mentioned something about my anxiety which in the last year has become quite elevated in some way. I believe I would be a great research candidate for dual-diagnosis. What affects am I looking being using for so long? What would be the first thing I can expect?
Obviously stress hormones such as amphetamine trigger stress responses. This can be elevated pulse and blood rpessure and can also be metnal effectgs such as insomnia and/or anxiety. Association between anxiety and amphetamine is quite common. There can be constriction of blood flow...especially where the drug is injected. This can cause tissue damage including heart attack and stroke.
