Was Punched On Chest. Hurts During Deep Breath. Iced It. Solution?

My friend punched me in the chest on my left side. Below the collor bone near sternum. It now feels tight, and hurts when I take a deep breath. Not so much when I cough, but if breath through my nose as a quick deep breath as if it were runny.

Iced off and on all day make it feel better for a temporary time period. I know your going to say get x ray but if there is a fracture can any thing really be done?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi,thanks for writing to HCM. Propably you could have sustained a crack of the rib resulting in hematoma formation or a simple soft tissue contusion which produces the typical symptoms as you have explained. In both the cases, the treatment in only conservative with analgesic & antiinflammatory medicines, local ice compressions etc. Your symptoms should resolve within 3 weeks, if not then a doctors consultation in necessary. Hope this helps
