Was Diagnosed With Overactive Thyroid, Losing Weight, Racing Heart, Shakiness. Had Radiation. On Propranolol. Take Medication?
I was diagnosed with over active thyroid and had radiation but still feel awful. I am a 73 year old male and I keep losing weight,my heart races and I get the shakes. I had the left side of my thyroid removed when I was 43 due to radiation treatment as a youngster. The doctor prescribed 2 prescriptions. One is PUT and the others to slow my heart down,Proteronolol (?) What are these medications? Should I see a surgeon to have the rest of my thyroid removed?
well you are 73, i am afraid you wont be fit for surgery, as anesthetic complications will increase the cons than pros. Propyl thiouracil is the drug which stops iodine from being part of the hormones released from thyroid i.e T3 T4. it block iodination of the iodine thus decreases hormones synthesis.. you should start methimazole or carbimazole if PTU is not enough aand yes propanolol should be continued 40 mg you can use it twice or thrice even considering your needs.. i would advise a thyroid scan and thyroid function tests to know better about the issue.. 18 months of these drugs usage will help you... after that surgery can be done but i am afraid age wont allow that.. so i guess it is the medicines and conservative management you going to follow
