Vomiting Blood, Red With Clots, Breastfed. Could It Be Hiatal Hernia ?

When my som was 4 days old we ended up at the ER for him vomitting blood. It was red with clots and looked like coffee grounds. I have since taken out dairy and soy products from my diet since I am breastfeeding him. Since then he has had no episodes of vomitting blood. Never got a definite answer on what it could be- all his bloodwork came back normal. Looking up online the symptoms, could he have a haital hernia? If so, will I have to keep dairy and soy out of my diet for as long as I am breastfeeding him?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Bleeding in newborn is due to the following causes:

1.swallowed maternal blood.

2.gastric bleed which is due to bleeding from newborn blood which is seen in
hemorrhagic disease of newborn.

Nothing to worry as blood work is normal.

Hiatal hernia wont present with bloody vomitings.

Consult the pediatrician regarding the feeding advise.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
