Used Misoprostol Twice For Abortion. Had Bleeding. Is Pregnancy Cleared?

Dear Doctor,

My girl friend was 43 days pregnant. This was even confirmed by the doctor. She took Mifepristone 200 mg tablet and just after 24 hours she inserted Misoprostol 200mg and within few hours she started bleeding but it stopped after a while. Again after 24 hours one more dose of Misoprostol 200mg was inserted and she bleeded for few hours and even some clot came out with it..What do you suggest we should do now? Is the pregnancy is cleared or we should consult a doctor?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi and thanks for the query,
There are both clinical and paraclinical parameters that are used to ensure whether the pregnancy has been cleared or not. These include disappearance of sympathetic signs of pregnancy like nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness and excessive urination, disappearance of lower abdominal pain, stopping of bleeding.
To be very sure if the uterus is free, these signs somewhat persist, it might be worthwhile to do an ultrasound which shall give an idea about the contents of the uterus (womb), whether fetal material is still present there or not. If present, your obstetrician would advocate for vacuum extraction.
Generally, when medical abortificients are well used as in your case within the first 6 to 7 weeks of pregnancy, they are generally successful.
In case of any doubts, do not hesitate to consult your gynecologist.
Thanks and best regards,
Luchuo, MD.
