Used Nordette As ECP. Had Unprotected Sex. Period Is Late. Pregnancy Chances?

My girl friend used Nordette as ECP some time in March & April. Last May 1 she had her period which lasted for 5 days. The following day she continue to bleed up to the 15th of May. Then it stopped already. On the 29th we had unprotected sex. To make sure, I ask her to take 4 pills (nordette) almost 1 hour only after we had sex. Then another 6 pills after 12 hours. She is 3 days delayed now based on her ovuation calendar (she is regular by the way). Is still there a chance that she'll get pregnant?

Hello,

Nordette is a combined OCP and using it as ECP does not give highest protection against unwanted pregnancy. Irregular taking pill with overdoses may create some adverse effect like abnormal vaginal bleeding, irregular period, abdominal cramp, wt gain etc.

Here, you need to undergo one home pregnancy test to be sure. Blood test for beta HCG is required to confirm the same. Following test report, you can consult with gynecologist.

Nordette should be taken regularly from D1 of cycle for 21 days with 7 days gap to get period. On properly taking this pill, it regularizes period and gives highest protection.

Practice safe sex in future. Good luck.

OBGYN Dr. Sree Gouri SR's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for the query.
It is difficult to guess the period of ovulation as she had menstrual flow for 15 days.
But the chances of pregnancy are less as she took hormonal pills for emergency contraception.
Let her wait till her expected date of periods and if she miss the date, better to go for pregnancy test once.
Repeated high doses of hormonal pills should not be taken as that can affect general health and future fertility.
Better to choose some regular method of contraception.
For more details you can ask me through: http://www.healthcaremagic.com/doctors/dr-sree-gouri-sr/63429
Take care.
