Trying To Conceive, Had Mild Cramping, Spotting And Heavier Bleeding With Several Clots. Is It A Miscarriage ?

Hi, I am a 24 year old female. This month my husband and I were trying to conceive. Yesterday, which would have been about the time of my period I experienced light pink spotting throughout the day. Then in the afternoon it got heavier, however the cramping was very mild ( I typically get them so bad I cry, especially the first few days.) Well I woke up to bright red blood mixed with dark stringy blood and an hour later I noticed several small clots followed by a big one the size of a half dollar and have been bleeding bright res with dark small clots since. My period does not usually come at a measurable time but it is always darker red and starts normal and ends light. I did take a hpt and it read negative. My question is, did I have a miscarriage and could I be pregnant?

Hi,
Thanks for the query.
Alteration in the menstrual cycles and menstrual flow is common.
This can occur due to many causes that affect the hormonal balance.
So, just by change in the menstrual flow, we cannot come to one conclusion regarding pregnancy.
Some women may pass clots and endometrial tissue during periods also.
And sometimes urine pregnancy test kit may not detect early pregnancy.
So, if you what to exclude the possibility of pregnancy, once go for blood test for pregnancy.
Because blood test measures beta hcg levels.
And even after abortion, beta hcg levels will take some time to come to zero.
So, if you get elevated beta hcg levels in blood test, that can indicate miscarriage.
Take care.

Hi,
When you had tried for conception& the bleeding pattern was changed, with increased ammount & clots, the possibility of a Hormonal deffesiensy/ nonviable pregnancy getting discharged does strike.
You had done home pregnancy test, which was too early to be reliable ( It turns +ve after 8-10 days over due.) If such thing happens again, go for blood HCG test, which is +ve around expected date of periods.
In case, bleeding does not stop, consult a doctor for any treatment required.
Doctor may suggest few investigations/ suggest some preventive medicines to avoid such problem in future..
Thanks.
