Trying to conceive. Wants to take folic acid. When to start taking it?

Hi, We want to plan a baby and need some advise on what measures should we take to enhance the process of reproduction . I am aware of the fact that folic acid is a vital suppliment for pregnancy but just want to understand when exactly I should start taking it before preganancy and what dose. Thanks a lot
