Trouble Falling Asleep, Panic Attacks. Had Knee Surgery. Stopped Oxycodone. Should I Continue Medication?

I had knee surgery on August 12 and emergency surgery for an infection September 12--I just finished 6 weeks of daily antibiotic infusions. Along the way I was sent home with prescriptions for oxycodone (5mg) which I took for a while twice a day and then once day at night and then cut in half and keep taking 1/2 at night only and a few days ago I decided it was time to drop. I am having trouble falling asleep and strange panic feelings every so often. Did I stop the oxycodone too soon-- I just didn't get any instructions!

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Oxycodone 5 mg twice a day is a low dose and should not cause any significant problems of withdrawal. I understand you were given immediate release preparation. 5 mg is available only as immediate release. Oxycodone must be tapered over weeks and under supervision. There is a tendency of anxiety and panic feelings during the withdrawal process and this gets controlled by itself. Probably your tapering was fine but you abruptly decided to go off it. You may discuss your panic feelings with your doctor who may suggest you to consult a mental health professional if felt necessary.

Hope this helps
