Tried Medication For MS. What Are The Pros And Cons Of BG 12?

I have tried several medicines for MS and am still getting slightly worse. I just heard about BG12 and was wondering what the pros and cons were of this drug. Right now, after Tysaibri, I have gone back to Avonex. The ones below the surface of the skin have too many side effects and Tysaibri 'wore' off sooner and sooner. I have been taking the 'new MS meds since 1993-4. Now, Avonex is the best so far but seems to have lost most of it's effectiveness. What do you think of BG12? Kim

Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
Thanks for posting query to this forum,
You are successfully treated for chronic Multiple Sclerosis with latest disease modifying drugs, currently on interferon beta-1a.

There are many such drugs including monoclonal antibody Natalizumab.
BG 12 that is Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is another immunomodulator and has less immunosuppressive action, but there are many side effects and hence It should be discussed with your Neurologist.

In this disease there are relapses which needs to be treated and there is progression of disease not the failure of therapy.

In acute cases corticosteroids and even plasmapheresis is required.
You should discuss with your Neurologist to plan best possible therapy for you.
wish you good Luck.

Take care.
