I would say tinnitus is treatable, but not curable. Some of the causes of tinnitus can be vascular like atherosclerotic vessel disease, glomus tumors, palatal myoclonus, idiopathic (cause is not known).Investigations relevant to tinnitus include examination of ear, audiometry, mri brain, psychiatry evaluation. This helps to rule out some of the major causes of tinnitus. The treatment options include tinnitus masking devices, anxiolytics, antidepressants. This is a field undergoing lot of research now a days. You can log on to american tinnitus association(www.ata.org) to know about tinnitus research
