Tooth And Jaw Pain, Fever. Taken Antibiotics. What To Do?

I started getting tooth and jaw pain on Saturday. It would be real bad and hn disapate. Monday I went to he dentist nd I was told it didn't seem to be dental related and that it was prob sinus. Tuesday the pain was horrible so I went to my doctor. She couldn't find anything but luckily I had a fever so she gave me antibiotics. Weds I was swollen as was a lymph node.... I could manage the pain w Tylenol but after 3 hours the pain would kick in. Today is fri and I havent taken any actions. I'm in need of pain relief but thought I should stop the tylenol to see where I am at. Pain is bad but no excruciating. I feel it in my cheeks, gum, chin. What should I do? Wait till I finish the antibiotics and see if pain subsides? Go back to the doctor? Or the dentist? I feel so helpless!

hello and welcome to HCM forum,
I would like to inform you that whenever tooth pain is associated with sinus, antibiotics , anti inflammatory and anti allergic medication is the line of treatment.
In your case, i agree with your dentist as he could not find any cavity in any of your tooth, therefore the pain is radiating from the sinus.
Kindly continue with the medication and see your doctor after completion of the course.
Till then you can do warm saline rinses(5-6 times/ day).
apply cold compresses on the affected side.

Do not worry you will be fine soon.
You can take low dose painkiller to control pain.

i hope i answered your query.
i wish you good health.
take care.

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Since the pain is not tooth related, chances of sinus infection, pericoronitis has to be ruled out.

Meanwhile ,gargle frequently with warm saline rinses.

Maintain oral hygiene well.

Take complete course of medicines prescribed.
Take care.

It is highly unusual to get a severe pain in 'tooth and jaw' from sinus, rather acute sinusitis. You may feel an heaviness in jaw from sinusitis but acute pain is uncommon. I will suggest you to go for another dental checkup with an Orthopantomogram or IOPA/Bitewing radiograph of all your posterior (premolar and molar teeth). There is every possibility that you have an inter-proximal (between two teeth) caries, that is too deep to involve the pulp( nerve and vessels inside the tooth). Antibiotics is probably the only choice to get relief. You can use paracetamol 1gm when you have severe pain. When your doctor prescribed Antibiotics, you should use it for at least for three day before saying that it is not working. Hope you will get relieved soon.

Hi
Thanks for the query
As your dentist has ruled out the problem in sinus, so don't worry follow your antibiotic prescription thoroughly and take steam inhalations as it would be beneficial to you.
Still if you are not satisfied, then consult dentist for OPG to rule out the exact source of pain.
Maintain good oral hygiene.
Wishing you recovery soon
Take care.

Dentist Dr. Anshumala Singh's  Response
Dear friend.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

The reason for present pain could be a deeply involved carious tooth, probably in the inter dental area.it could also be due to sinus infection.

As you are already taking antibiotics and analgesics, and your dentist has found no decayed tooth then,in that case it is best to see your ENT specialist.

An x ray called waters view would be very helpful, to see the sinus involvement.

Meanwhile, do warm saline rinses and do steam inhalation. This should give you some relief till you see your ENT specialist. please do write to us for further queries.

Hope it helps.

Thanks.

Take care.

hi..
thanks for the query...
i think your pain is of dental origin and is due to deep carious lesion that has not been identified by your dentist... you should go to him again for proper clinical examination and should also get an X-ray done... it will also show infection in periapical tissues also, if any... donot wait for the pain to subside...
according to the situation, the tooth involed will be treated by your dentist...

take care...

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

Since tooth infection is ruled out, there could be a chance of sinus infection.
Consult an ENT specialist and get the checkup done.
Take the necessray x-rays.
Continue with the course of antibiotics and analgesics.
Take lukewarm saline rinses, warm inhalations.

Hope you find this answer as helpful.

Regards .
