Temporary Filling Of Root Canal Gone, No Pain. Should The Filling Be Fitted Again?
hi i had the start off a root canal done today (9 1/2 hours ago) and i've just noticed the temporary filling has gone the cotton wool is still there and no pain at the moment. i have an appointment a week friday to finish it should i try and book in again to have another filling fitted or wait until the appointment? i was in an immense amount of pain this morning and today was an emergency appointment.
Hi, You can not wait till your next appointment as there are all chances having spread infection in the gum and or prepared cavity tooth might be broken while eating or chewing food and can cause problem. So take emergency appointment and get examined. Ok and take care.
Welcome to HCM forum. Temporary filling is given to root canal treating tooth to protect the root canal from further contamination from food and saliva from oral cavity. As the root canal treatment progresses doctor clean the root canal from infected materials and infected dentin( inner layer of root canal) to make it free from bacteria or reduce the bacterial presence to a non infectable amount, so that they will not be able to infect the root apex area. Now, as your filling is lost but the cotton remains, food may not be impacted into the root canal but saliva will pass into the root canal and bacteria from saliva will re infect the root canal, which requires further cleaning of root canal in the next visit. So it is necessary to visit your dentist as early as possible to clean the root canal again and to place a temporary filling. Your pain is not due to the filling loss. It is either because you already have an infection at tooth root apex area or your root canal is not properly cleaned and some infected material remains into the root canal. Hope, I have been able to explain the situation to you. Regards.
hello if it was your first appointment then i think its not so urgent to get it filled again.temporary filling is given to isolate your canal from outer environment so that it remains uninfected. but in first appointment generally only some of the infection is removed and the dentist has to again remove the infected pulp. so you can wait till friday......... but after 2nd or 3rd sitting it becomes important that your temporary filling should stay till your next appointment... hope it helps
Temporary filling is given to fill the tooth completely to prevent contamination by saliva, if there is no pain in the tooth so there is no urgency of the filling. But it is better to get the filling done by taking an emergency appointment with your Dentist. Avoid eating from the affected side. At home take lukewarm saline and antispetic mouthwash rinses. Maintain a good oral hygiene.
hello thank you for writing in HCM forum as you have completed with first appointment of rct , canal Opening must have been done and dentist put a cotton ball to cover the cavity. if cotton get displaced , there can be accumulation of food debris though its not an emergency , it will be better to take appointment and get it replaced. take care
hello, thanx 4 sharing ur problem. if you are not facing any emergency then u can wait till the next appointment because cotten wool is still there, try not to eat from the affected side untill the treatment get finished and keep ur mouth clean.. have a good health, thanx

Hi, It's not an immediate, run-to-the-emergency-dentist kind of thing. So no need to panic. But, it depends a little on whether the root canal was complete or not. Temporary filling is given to seal the cavity to prevent the leakage of saliva. Ring your dentist. she/he should be able to tell you if it's something to correct sooner than Friday. In either case, try to avoid eating in the area of the treated tooth. And, have a dentist place a new temporary for you.
