Taking Trimethoprim For Urinary Infection. Headaches, Burning Pain While Urination. History Of IBS

i have been tested for a urine infection and it came out possible. I have been taking trimethoprim 3 times and have 3 left. Have had bad headches and was wondering what is the best quickest least side effect antibiotic. Also, what does possible urine infection mean. How likely it is that I do not have that. I had a burning pain when I and a need to urinate a lot, but I also have IBS and read that that can cause similar symptoms. If I miss a dose one is due now and do not take it until the morning will it still work, or will i have to start again.

HI
Welcome to HCM

The urine infection means the infection is spread along the urinary tract which consists of two kidneys, two ureter, a bladder and the urethra along with its opening. Such infections cause burning sensation or pain in the urinary tract and there is frequent urge of urination which is totally different from IBS which have symptoms of diarrhea or blood in stool and abdominal cramps with or without nausea/vomiting.

The best treatment for Urinary tract infection can be obtained by having a urine culture and sensitivity test which gives both the causative organism and effective antibiotic.

The drug with least i would rather say no side effect is cranberry extract tablets which is a latest research product and have very much good effects in such infections.

Additional remedy is to increase fluid intake also clears the infection rapidly

Thanks
Regards

Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

First of all, commenting on the antibiotic. You need to know that each individual has a particular response to any given antibiotic. Some individuals will be highly susceptible (that antibiotic will be effective in them); whereas some individuals will be resistant(will not work at all) to them. We can asses this with the help of another urine investigation called a urine culture and sensitivity examination. This investigation will first confirm the presence of an infection, it will then give information of the infection-causing organism and finally a list of medications, that can or cannot be used in your specific case. This is a very good investigation, and thus, in your case I would advice it.

Burning sensation and frequent urination are both symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI) and should be confirmed with the help of laboratory investigations.

A possible UTI is suspected first with the help of clinical presentation (your symptoms), this is then followed by a urine analysis; which can guide the doctor through diagnosis, but at times provides inconclusive reports. Whereas, a urine culture and sensitivity is much more accurate and precise, but time consuming.

It is fine if you miss one dose, continue with the usual next dose, and just add one extra dose to the complete treatment regimen.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
