Taking Sarotena. Suffer From Herpes. Is It Safe To Stop Sarotena Suddenly?
Hi..Ma grandmom is taking Sarotena 75mg tablets since last 25yrs..Just two weeks back she was detected with eye herpes and was hospitalised for a week where the doctorz stopped giving her sarotena medicine and gave ativan 1mg tablet..She is recovering physically but her mental condition is getting bad day by day..i want 2 that is it advisable and proper to stop her brain medicine(sarotena) suddenly and is it because of sudden withdrawal of sarotena coz of which her mental condition is not gettng back 2 normal? PLEASE ADVICE

Hello,
Sudden withdrawl of medicines like SAROTENA after a Prolonged use of 25 years is bound to cause withdrawl symptoms.There are plenty of physical as well as psychological symptom of withdrawl.
Psychologiacal with drawl symptoms include,anxiety,agitations,insomnia,irritability etc.Abrupt withdrawl of SSRI group of drugs like SAROTENA is never done.
Even if it has to withdrawn,either the dose is gradually tapered off or a long acting SSRI with a very long biogical half life like fluoxetine is given as a support.
The best way to reduce the symptoms are to reintroduce the SAROTENA with either th same dose or reduced dose.
You must talk to your psychiatrist for proper guidance on this issue.
