Taking Prednisone For Herpes Keratitis In Left Eye Which Has Led To Eye Flare Ups. Is It Because Of The Corneal Transplant?

I have lost my sense of smell. I had a MRI of the brain without contrast even though my ent wanted it. Something to do with not having recent blood work for liver enzymes. Would a test with contrast matter? The test was negative. A look up the nostrils showed nothing. I do have other health problems. ITP which required high doses of prednisone at least 4times. Spleen removed and after that rituxan infusion which has been successful . That treatment with prednisone ended jan 1, 2013. I started to notice the change in smell around February. After the negative MRI my ent said there is nothing to be done. I refuse to believe that. I am 64 years old and cannot imagine life without taste and smell. None of my doctors have any solutions. Including internist, ENT, hemotogist, I have herpes keratitis in my left eye and have been on many different eye drops over the years and had a corneal transplant. Needless to say the ITP treatments especially prednisone gave me many eye flare ups and used many medications. (Valtrex, zirgan, cortisone drops and Timodol when my pressure went up. Sorry, I did not intend to make this so lengthily. Is there anyone who can help me I would greatly appreciate any information. Thank You

Hello,
It seems from the history that you are having loss of smell. smell sensations are carried by olfactory nerve and this does not have any relationship with corneal transplant or taking of prednisolone.
Since your problem seems to be related to cranial nerve I advice you to consult Neurologist for further evaluation and treatment accordingly.

Thank you
