The postop care and instructions following an ankle fracture repair are very important to follow to help ensure a good outcome. There is always a period of immobilization and non-weight bearing, followed by a period of gradual and progressive weight bearing, and then finally a period of full weight bearing and reconditioning. Those time frames are specific to your individual problem and it is important to follow your surgeons postop plan for you. The swelling and stiffness is a normal progression in the postop period and can be helped with compression and range of motion exercises that are specifically assigned to you by your surgeon.
