Swollen Left Foot, Pulsation In Neck, High Heart, Normal Test Results, Diagnosed With Anxiety, Later Had Swelling On Both Feet, Enervation. Aging?

My left foot was swelling and I felt a pulsation on the left side of my neck . I went to my physician. While in his office I had a heartbeat of 125 while laying down. He immediately sent me to the ER. I had blood tests, ultrasounds of both legs, urine test, a chest ex ray and a chest CAT scan. They were all normal. However during the several hours I was there I had persistent rapid heart beat between 125 & 144. They sent me home saying I must have anxiety . However now both feet are swelling and I still feel the pulsation in my left neck but now I have to get up two to three times per night to urinate. My energy level is also lower than normal. I am a female who will be 50 soon. Is this just getting older? I think something is not right?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Pamela,

Yes, there is something wrong. It is just not that you are getting older and bound to get this.

The causes for swelling in the feet could be:

1. Cardiac

2. Renal

3. Thyroid dysfunction

4. Local causes

5. Others

Please get the following specific investigations done to conclude on the cause, if not done earlier.

1. ECG - to see if your heart is normal

2. Blood urea Nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine to look at the kidney function

3. Fasting thyroid profile

4. Serum albumin to look for hypoalbuminaemia

If these are normal, then we could say it is probably a benign condition, which will go away eventually.

Meanwhile, you need to treat it symptomatically with foot end elevation and crepe bandage.

The fluctuating high heart rate is a concern. If the ECG is abnormal, do get a echocardiography of your heart done.

I wish you recover soon and lead a normal life again.

God bless.
