Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The treatment of Olecranon bursitis of the elbow is as follows (If it is due to a noninfective cause) -

* Elbow pads - An elbow pad may be useful to cushion your elbow.
* Activity changes - Avoid activities that cause direct pressure to your swollen elbow.
* Medications - Oral medications such as Advil or other anti-inflammatories may be used to reduce swelling and relieve your symptoms.
* If the swelling and pain do not respond to these measures after 3 to 4 weeks, then an Aspiration followed by a corticosteroid injection into the bursa may help in resolving the problem
* If the bursitis is due to an infection, then a complete excision of the bursa is mandatory.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
