Swelling And Pain In Knee Area Due To Fall From Roof, Mild Fever. Possible Broken Bone?

My brother fell off the roof today and hurt one of his legs by the knee area. It is swollen, causing him alot of pain, and he has a fever now of 101. how can we tell if he broke something or just sprained it badly? I know a xray would answer all questions, but sitting for 6 hrs in a ER doesn't seem like something he can do now.

Thank you, but never mind.

Dear Sir/Madam
Thanks for your query to us.
You should get an x-ray done because not all fractures can be diagnosed by clinical examination alone. Moreover it is best to get examined by an orthopedician (specialist in bone diseases) to ascertain the extent of damage to knee ligaments, as some of them will require operative treatment only.
Meanwhile apply ice to the area as it is a fresh injury. This will help decreasing swelling and pain.
Do go to the ER.
Sincerely
