Surgery Putting Steel Plate And Screws On Forearm Bone. Doctor Said Pain Was Due To Nerve Block Done By Anesthesiologist. Taking Percocet. What Might Have Gone Wrong?
I had surgery 3 weeks ago on my right arm, putting a steel plate and 7 screws in my forearm bone... I have had excruciating pain every day since calling the doctor complaining about the severe pain! the pain is not in the surgery area but in my shoulder and my tricep, bicep and from the tip of my thumb all the way up my forearm muscle is totally numb they think it was from the anesthesiologist putting the nerve block in. the doctor has prescribed me starting with percocet and phenergan and 800mg ibuprofen and those did nothing for the pain. so they kept referring me to the hospital they would give me a shot of morphine and that would give me relief for 4 hrs and tell me to follow up with my doctor in the morning.at this point i had been to the ER 4 times and back forth to my doctors several times so i did and my doctor would tell me there was nothing he could do... then i started to get very upset with him and then he said he would prescribe me a nerve med called Lyrica and steriod pack Methylprednisolone 4mg and still no relief. So now going to the ER for the 5th time begging for help ... They started treating me like i was a pill popping junky... finally after begging for help to relieve the pain the ER prescribe me Dilaudid 2mg and told me to be very careful taking it because it is 10 times stronger then Morphine and only take 1 at night before bed... it does nothing for the pain but makes me sleep for about 2hrs waking right back up with the pain! what is wrong and why isn t anything working?
According to my opinion there is some thing wrong with your surgery and your nerve may be involved. I can definitely say that it is not related to anaesthesia at all. Effect of anaesthetic drugs used for nerve block during surgery lasts for 3-4 hours only. It can't last long and only small needle is used to deliver drugs. Small needle can't cause severe damage to nerves. It need scalpel for damage, which surgeons have. You should take second opinion from orthopedician and neurosurgeon. Get well soon.
