Choosing Healthy Food Combinations
When you have high blood sugar, it is best to avoid foods that will cause your blood sugar to go even higher. Carbohydrates are turned into sugar, and absorbed into the bloodstream to provide energy for your cells functions. Simple carbohydrates, such as sugar, white bread and potato chips, raise the blood sugar quickly. Complex carbohydrates, such as vegetables and whole grain breads that are high in fiber, raise your blood sugar more slowly, giving your body a chance to naturally maintain lower blood sugar levels. Protein and fat do not affect the blood sugar at all, but will help to slow the absorption of carbohydrates that you eat at the same time.
Exercising
When you exercise, your muscles require energy, which comes from the sugar in your blood. If you have high blood
glucose, exercise can use up some of the sugar, leaving you with more normal blood sugar levels. In addition, exercise contributes to overall good health, and a lower body weight, which can improve blood sugar management.
Drinking Tea
Drinking certain types of tea can help to lower blood sugar levels. Cinnamon tea, for example, can be brewed by placing a few cinnamon sticks into a cup of boiling water, and steeping for a few minutes. Green tea can also be beneficial for lowering high blood sugar. Sweetening your tea with
stevia, a natural sweetener, also works to lower blood sugar levels.
