Suggest Treatment To Control Blood Pressure

Hello - recently had physical and blood pressure was 170/90 - had a cardio gram which was normal. My doctor suspects white coat syndrome. Had it rechecked today - bit lower but still high. Is a 24 hour monitor a good idea? I have no shortness of breath or chest pain. Thanks.

Welcome to healthcaremagic,
Normal blood pressure for adults is less than 140 over 90.
Few patients record high blood pressure due to anxiety on seeing the doctor or visiting the hospital which is called white coat syndrome. This is usually a temporary phenomenon and the blood pressure comes down later.
In your case as you are getting repeatedly high blood pressure readings, you might probably be having hypertension for which treatment should be started. Do a 24 hour blood pressure monitoring only if your doctor recommends it for you or else it is not required.

In order to control blood pressure follow the given below advice:
1. Regular exercise such as brisk walking for at least 30 minutes per day
2. Consume a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy products.
3. Reduce salt intake to less than 5 grams per day (1 teaspoon is approximately 5 grams)
4. Take your medications regularly and get your blood pressure checked at least once a month.
Hope that answers you question.
Regards, Dr.Ismail
