Suggest Treatment For Weight Loss

Hi, Dr I am grossly overweight. I have been fighting the problem my entire life. I have tried to get some answers from my GP only to have him deny any interest in the problem. According to him it doesn t matter. He did finally suggest a nutritionist in the Clinic. The visit (costing $297.16) produced nothing. She was of the opinion (and I was painfully honest) that the food was not a problem, but a lack of exercise. I must admit that I don t exercise as much as I would like to. I have an painful back due to a very active younger life and resulting injury to my spine. I am now 89 years old, use a cane for better balance walking outside, and my walker in the house because it is easier on my back. Unfortunately for my peace of mind, and he is a very pleasant man, I have begun to believe that my well-being is of no interest and is deserving of merely a hand shake after the allowed fifteen minutes. I am probably wrong, but it is now bothering me. Sorry, I have been with him for a number of years. I need to lose weight! I am obese, I weigh 189 pounds, I am 5 feet 4 inches in height. MY health for my age seems to be good. I have had a heart attack, resulting in a stent over my heart. I have two knee replacements resulting from teaching and sking for over twenty -five years, I have had three sons; April 1949, December 1950, and January 1952. I live by myself, with a cat, drive my car, and am very busy with church activities ( bell director for our hand bells ), call for a group of elderly square dancers as well as cue for round dancers. ,1950 merely a hand shake

Hello and Welcome,
First, congratulations on keeping yourself as healthy as you have until 89! Looking forward, let us gain a new perspective of your situation. You are active
despite the knee replacements and heart attack. The BMI should be higher for those in the older age range as studies have found that to be a little overweight as one ages leads to lower death rates. So, you are currently in the obese range at over 30, but you do not have as much to lose as you originally had me think when you said you were grossly overweight.

Moving forward, research on clinical subjects has shown marvelous results with the supplement resveratrol at 150 mg/day in respect to weight loss and cardiovascular protection. Please discuss with doctor, who probably hasn't heard of it. However he can research it and locate the clinical studies. Also resveratrol made from grapes is far superior to that made of knotweed. Stay away for all over the counter weight loss supplements due to your heart.

The calculations say that - without activity- your basal metabolic rate is about 1400 which is what you would burn staying in bed all day. Since you have heart problems, the type of meal plan to follow would be the DASH diet, which is available online. Focus on restriction of saturated fat and replace with canola oil and virgin olive oil. Eliminate all added sugars as they are bad for your heart and are empty calories. Think...no juice with added sugar. Limit serving size to 4 oz /day and focus on two fresh fruit per day rather than juice.

You probably will not lose much weight at a calorie level above 1200 no matter what my calculations say - from the voice of experience. Train or retrain yourself in eyeballing serving sizes as that is the way these extra calories sneak on in.

There are programs you can watch to use as a structured exercise program that is compatible with your limitations. Most are some version of "Sit Fit" and contain cardio and strength training that can be done from a seated position.
