Suggest Treatment For Weakness Along With Weight Loss And Diarrhea

Symptoms my dad (81 yrs., 5 6) has: About a month ago at a wedding reception...got shaky, dizzy, glazed over look in his eyes, said he was really full from having just ate a big meal. We sat him down but he was unresponsive for several minutes until he threw up. An asparin was put under his tongue because of the worry of a heart attach or stroke. (Which I ve now read that does no good.) After he threw up he said he felt better, knew what was happening and answered all questions correctly. Paramedics looked him over thoroughly with BP, EKG, etc. and said he looked good. Follow up appointments with his doctor revealed an internal bleeding hemorrhoid which they tied off during a colonoscopy. That helped the bleeding diarrhea but he still has no energy, & has lost nearly 15 lbs., (currently around 143 I think). An upper GI was done last week with the diagnoses of acid reflux and is on acid blocker medication but he still is getting weaker and has no energy. He has been drinking a daily Ensure for a week now but still not seeing any improvement. Please, any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history about your Father and understood your concerns.
Since your Father is 81 years old, the aging can have its problems and comes under the purview of Geriatric problems.
Since the sensorineural function get delayed, it is possible that he has a momentary stroke that caused him dizziness, shakiness and glazed overlook in eyes as the full and large meal does divert the blood supply to the gastrointestinal system.
But since he is loosing weight and had blood diarrhea I would advise you the following:
Get a CT scan of the abdomen including that of prostate and blood tests for all the tumor markers like PSA, Alfa fetoproteins VEA so that a chance of cancer can be ruled out.
ALso go for psychological evaluation as senile psychosis can be another reason for such symptoms.
Change over to another supplements as Ensure is not helping.
Ask him his likes and dislikes for the foods and beverages so that a proper nutrition can be maintained; this is the most important thing one looks over and misses out on this particular point.
