Suggest Treatment For Throat Irritation And Flu

I have been having trouble swallowing and feel a strangling sensation at the base of my throat. My thyroid was removed back in 2000 due to a goiter. I had the flu with vomiting for two days this week but this problem started a few days before that. It would come and go but now it is constant keeping me awake at night and making me not want to eat or drink. It seems like it is also making me yawn a lot. When I swallow, it feels like air is pocketing in my esophagus and it makes me want to gag sometimes but I cannot belch it out. Should I go to the doctor or a hospital outpatient. The pressure at the base of my neck makes it very discomforting and I don t think I can wait weeks to get testing but I didn t think an ER would order the testing right away anyway.

Emergency Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing your query.

After reading your post, I would suggest that you should get yourself clinically examined and investigated by an ENT specialist.
Following investigations may be helpful :-
1. Throat swab culture.
2. Complete Blood Count(CBC).

You can take an antihistamine like Fexofenadine 120 mg once a day along with phenylephrine and Omeprazole 40 mg for relief. Warm saline gargles will also be helpful.
Avoid spicy and cold foods.
Further management can be planned according to the reports of the above mentioned investigations.
I hope this is helpful to you.
Thanks.
