Suggest Treatment For The Broken Scaphoid Bone In The Left Wrist

I am a 20 year old female. Over 4 moths ago, I broke the scaphoid bone in my left wrist. It was originally not seen in the very first xray that I had on the same day that the injury occured, so I was sent home without any cast or support for it and it became extremely painful. The next day I was called back to the Hospital and a half cast was put on. I wore it for 4 weeks as per the doctors instructions, and when i returned to the Hospital it was put in a full fibreplast cast. At this point I was still in pain. I continually went back and forth to the Hospital and did have a CT scan done which showed that the bone was healng. It is now over 4 months later and I still get pain as well as numbness and tingling in my thumb and I have trouble carrying things which is required of me in my job.

Hello,
Thank you for the question
Scaphoid bone fractures typically require 8 - 12 weeks to heal but for some individuals it can take up to 6 months. There are two types of scaphoid fracture: non displaced(treated with cast) and displaced(treated with surgery) .In your case since CT scan was already done and showed the bone healing it must be non displaced fracture.
Meanwhile,I suggest you take pain killer like ibuprofen 600 mg (if not allergic) to relieve the pain and avoid lifting/pushing weight so that bone heals properly.Physical therapy can also help with managing pain and regaining muscle strength.
You should also consult your doctor immediately to get additional evaluation done to determine the positioning of cast since you are complaining of numbness, tingling in the thumb.
Hope I could answer your question
please address additional questions or concerns.
