Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Painful Ankle

My brother is 54 yrs old, has diabetes, is a veteran...so has been seeing Doctors at the Veterans Hospital,...is now complaining of swollen ankles, not being able to sleep (due to having problems breathing) and has gained 20 lbs in last month that is NOT associated with over-eating...the doctor told him it s because of water retintion. What is going on with him and should we step in and take him to a specialist?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have swollen and painful ankle . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like peripheral neuropathy , hypertension , vitamin B12 deficiency , kidney disease or venous insufficiency . There can be other problems also like compressed nerve arthritis , gout or injury . I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . Doctor may order CT scan or x-ray along with blood test and nerve conduction test . Doctor may also refer you to cardiologist for cardiac problem or nephrologist for kidney problem .For now keep your legs in hot water tub with Epsom salt for 15 minutes daily and keep your legs elevated while lying down . Also lower your salt consumption.
