Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Green Tongue After Tongue Piercing

Hi, I recently got a tongue piercing (3 days ago). My tongue is swollen (but it s normal), and the pain is minimal. However, there s a thin green coating over the top of my tongue. I m only using salt water to rinse my mouth out, not mouthwash, so it s not due to that. Should I be worried of infection?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. The swelling you are noticing on the tongue is due to the piercing as it has been just 3 days since you have been through the procedure. As the pain is minimal now, it should relieve in 1 or 2 more days without any complications.

The green tongue you are seeing is due to growth of candida fungus/yeast infection over the tongue due to lack of proper tongue cleaning. Salt water gargling is not enough to remove the accumulated plaque on the tongue. I would advise you to use the back of the toothbrush to gently clean the tongue and remove debris and plaque. Start using Chlorhexidine Mouthwash and take Fluconazole 150 mg (Fole) once a day for 5 days to control the yeast infection.

If the green coating and swelling persists after a week or increases during this week, then you should consult a dentist for physical examination and further investigations.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
