Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Bruised Vagina After An Injury

I was riding my bike down hill when I had to stop suddenly to avoid a pedestrian and landed on the bar of the bike. My vagina is swollen and black and blue and it hurts tremendously. Should I go to the hospital or should I treat it as a bruise and just ice it?

Dear Madam,

Poor you! I do empathize your situation.

If your vulva is bruised, with open lacerations, you may need some local antiseptic application. If it is only contusion, local icepacks will give relief and it will give relief from the pain also. The fact that it is black and blue means that there is no open wound and it is contusion. It is always safe to have Tetanus protection after such injury.

However, I would advise you get examined from a Gynaecologist to rule out any internal injury. Just get confirmed that your Bartholin's Glands which are situated in the labia majora are not damaged and infected.

I should say that madam you are quite lucky in not having any injury to the urethra. We have seen rupture of urethra cases in such accidents. It is a very difficult injury to repair and causes false passage of urinary opening.

OBGYN Dr. Nishikant Shrotri's  Response
Hallow Dear,

From your history, it appears that you had a blunt injury of the vulva. This causes some bleeding under the skin and causes bruising with pain.

You may apply ice packs over the tender area which might be appearing bluish now. Squatting in cold water will be helpful. Some pain killer might help you get relief from the pain.

If at all there is any open wound, you may require dressing and antibiotics.

Please avoid riding bike and even sitting astride till you are relived. It will take about a week for recovery. If you are sexually active, please observe sexual abstinence till cure.

Please report to Gynaecologist for asserting the extent of injury. Mostly you would not require hospitalization.

I hope this helps you.
