Suggest Treatment For Swelling On Face With Severe Toothache

The third tooth from the back of my lower left side, has a crown on it, due to a root canal from 20 years ago. I woke up in the middle of the night with a terrible tooth ache. I called the dentist first thing, and they had me come in. The X-ray showed that I had an absess. They told me I should have it pulled. I was then sent to a periodontist, who explained everything to me. We decided to have the tooth pulled, and prepared for a implant. I was in the chair for four hours. I had only novacaine. They did a guided ties regen-resorb-per, surge place implant: endosteal, bone graft, implant placement. I was in extreme pain when the novacaine wore off. This all happened on Thursday, by Saturday, I had to contact my doctor, since the pain was awful, not to mention that the one side of my face was extremely swollen. I was put on a steroid, and given tylenol with codine. It is now Tuesday, and my swelling has come down, but now the upper level of my teeth are killing me. I could barely drink any fluids today, especially cold ones, due to the extreme sensitivity to temperatures. It truly hurts terribly! I do not know if this is a result of everything that is going on, or is this something else I need to look into? Thank you.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query swelling on face with severe toothache is because you had abscess in your tooth region and pus from that abscess find no way to escape and it starts spreading in facial spaces and leads to facial space infection. While extraction this infection was there and you did not took strong antibiotics for this and it is causing pain now.

Need no to panic about anything. Your periodontist is giving you right treatment by inserting an implant at the place of socket because implant will gives you the same functioning as that of your natural tooth.

I would suggest you to take a combination of paracetamol and Azithromycin as it will give you relief.

If you have extreme sensitivity report it to your periodontist and start with tooth paste such as sensodyne.

Maintain hygiene of oral cavity by brushing and flossing very gently. Don't dislodge clot from socket area.

Do warm saline gargles three times a day.

Your symptoms will resolve with in 1 week after proper suppression of infection.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain the swelling and pain after a surgical procedure is a normal finding and it happens due to inflammation caused due to injury cased to the soft tissues during the surgical procedure leading to swelling and pain..

You need not to worry and steroids and painkillers can be very much relieving..
Follow the post operative instructions given to you by your dentist to avoid any complications..

The other part of your complain is that in case if you have sensitivity or pain in the tooth of upper jaw there can be infection in the tooth which could have exposed the nerves causing irritation and pain.

In case if you have only severe sensitivity in the tooth there can be Dentinal hypersensitivity which causes sensitivity of the tooth due to exposed root portions due to gum recession or due to loss of enamel from the tooth crown..

I would suggest you to get the tooth checked by yoyr dentist and in case of infection root canal treatment or extraction depending on the condition of tooth can be done..

In case of hypersensitivity desensitizing pastes can help..

Hope this information helps..
