Suggest Treatment For Swelling In The Feet During Pregnancy

Hi there. I am 33 weeks pregnant and am struggling with severe swelling. I started swelling in my left leg when I was about 15 weeks and was sent for an ultrasound to ensure there were no clots. The swelling has just gotten worse since then, and it was suggested that I wear DVT socks. I am now so swollen that I cant get the socks on anymore. When I stand for longer than 2 minutes I start getting pins and needles in my legs and I am unable to feel temperature differences. From what I can feel I am swollen all the way into the groin area. When I get home from work I elevate my feet and leave them elevated through the night, but the swelling does not subside (not even slightly). Is this normal?

Hi Madam,

I have gone through your history and do empathize with your sufferings.

Swelling on feet during pregnancy may be mainly due to:
1. Anaemia and hypoproteinimia; i.e. low haemoglobin and low proteins
2. Heart problem
3. Urinary infection
4. High blood pressure
5. Varicose veins of the legs
6. Deep vein thrombosis of legs
7. Diabetes
8. No cause. This is most common cause, however does not cause such an enormous oedema.

The extent of your oedema is so much that prima facae it seems due to either Varicose veins of the legs, Deep vein thrombosis of legs or Anaemia and hypoproteinimia.

Since your scan has ruled out deep vein thrombosis of the legs, we have to think of the other causes. You have been given DVT socks for varicose veins. If it is not giving you relief, please get the blood pressure checked. Also estimation of haemoglobin and proteins in the blood would guide you to some extent. The symptom of feeling of pins & needles in the leg is more suggestive of either anaemia or diabetes. Get your diabetic profile also done.

If anaemia and hypoproteinimia is detected, you will have to take iron and high protein diet. My first diagnosis is anaemia and hypoproteinaemia. Please get examined and if needed treated for it.

Any other cause detected from the list above, may call for the specific treatment.
