I got sunburned today at my college football game, and I m trying to avoid getting sun poisoning or any other reactions to the sunburn since it s bad enough that I got burned at all. Is there anything I can do? I ve taken ibuprofen for the swelling, ran cool water over it for 10 minutes, and have been drinking water.
Acute sunburn can be very painful and discomforting.
If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to take a short course of an oral steroids. Oral steroids act very fast and immediately bring down the swelling and discomfort.
In addition to that you could use topical moderately potent topical steroid e.g fluticasone propionate cream, twice daily for a week.
An OTC pain killer/anti-inflammatory e.g ibuprofen or aspirin can be taken twice or thrice daily to relieve the pain and discomfort.
Always use a broad spectrum sunscreen, throughout the day.
