Suggest Treatment For Stress And Depression

Hi,

This isn't about me, my friend has been extremely unhappy recently; with her family life, boy troubles and work situation. I think she is about 20 or 21 (I can't quite remember!). We were talking online today and she began talking about jumping off a bridge. We have talked for almost an hour now for about how she is feeling, and have pleaded for her to see a doctor but she point blank refuses. I have seen a friend in depression before, who then went on and attempted suicide and I am scared to death that this could be happening again!

Unfortunately, I have moved to another country and have no way of getting back in the immediate future, otherwise I would drag her to the doctors and force her to talk, but I am worried sick that something may happen, and I will then feel partially responsible for not being able to do more. I'm hoping that simply being here and listening when I can will be enough, but what if it isn't? Do you have any advice for what I can do??

Thank you very much,

Phil

Dear
Welcome to HCM
We understand your concerns

I went through your details. You are doing good and you are being a good Samaritan. Don't worry. If you can delay her suicidal attempt by one hour, you can delay it forever. Your friend acted as if she will commit suicide. I presume otherwise. She is depressed, OK. But lack the courage to commit suicide. You can talk to her, motivate her because you know her better. You can use your past knowledge about her to motivate her. You may read some books on this subjects and use that knowledge to motivate her. In any case motivation is the first step.
