Suggest Treatment For Strep Throat With Swollen Tonsils And Severe Coughing Fits

My 11 year old daughter was tested positive for strep with no symptoms. We went in for violent coughing fits which result in spitting up and hard to breath and choking like. It occurs every couple of hours all day long. worse at night. Her tonsils are swollen and almost touching her uvula. Any thoughts on how to help relieve her coughing and bring down the swollen tonsils.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

As per your description it seems that she has pharyngitis(sore throat/inflammation of throat) caused by streptococccal infection. You don't need to worry as it can be cured completely with timely antibiotic treatment.

I suggest you to consult a general practitioner and get the following things done:-
(1)- Antibiotic therapy is essential and newer penicillin like amoxicillin are the preferred drug and treatment is required for days. If she is allergic to penicillin azithromycin or cephalosporins can be tried.
(2)- You can also give her acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and ease the sore throat.
(3)- Do warm saline gargles or gargling with a antiseptic mouth wash.
(4)- Expectorant cough syrups can be tried to clear mucus and secretions.
(5)- Adequate bed rest is needed to fight off the infection.
(6)- Have healthy diet and drink lot of water. Avoid carbonated drinks.
Most cases gets subsided with this treatment and complications are very unlikely.

Hope I have answered your query.
Regards.

Dr.Shinas Hussain
