Suggest Treatment For Sprained Ankle

I got a severe sprained ankle about five weeks ago. I still have swelling around the outside of my ankle and if I touch certain areas of my foot it sends a tingling painful sensation down to the middle of my foot to my middle three toes... Is this normal for the healing process?

If your ankle sprain is very bad my first suggestion is that you should get your ankle x ray as it may be a hairline fracture which may be missed by you. If there is no fracture present then I would suggest you to apply splint to ankle. You can get readymade splint or plaster of paris can also be applied. It should be kept for 2 -4 weeks at least as ligament healing will take some time in healing so it will heal in this amount of time.
My other suggestion is that you should not put weight over this foot and also keep it elevated over a pillow so that swelling should not progressed any further. As far as tingling and numbness sensation is concerned it is mostly due to swelling which put pressure on cutaneous nerve.
