It's basically a narcotic. The addiction is generally treated like a
narcotic addiction, but you are showing that there is significantly more complexity to it than just that.
1) will need significant counseling on this. The general way addictions are treated is by:
a) avoid... get rid of the drug from around the house... changing one's milieu. The drugs with the worst recovery rate are those which you can't get rid of: cigarettes, alcohol and food. This is also one which is available at drugstores and does not require seeking it in dark alleys from bad people.
bad. tricky.
b) substitute. Narcotic treatment centers are really helpful. However, the amount of narcotic effect from the drug is minimal so many of the usual treatmetns (
methadone) will actually mean you are on MUCH higher amounts of narcotics. The
valium also is a more dangerous addiction, so, 1 day of use of it is slightly bad but regular use of valium as a substitute is not better.
transcend. Yeah, this is going to be the main one. 1) exploring what the triggers.. the feelings, emotions, thoughts, circumstances are that trigger use. I need a sweet roll in the morning. but a 200 calorie one works as well as a 500 calorie one. I need food at lunch and dinner but substitutions of very small ones works. I automatically go for snacks with any emotion. I can catch myself and realize the triggering feeling lasts under 60 seconds or substitute a no calorie snack like water.
2) finding what withdrawal is like and what symptoms occur with it. Getting used to them and being ok with them.
3) active role in helping others as part of a 12 step program.
mainly, there are going to be issues different from just the usual narcotic addiction and counseling / 12 step programs are going to be useful. Furthemore, medications can damp down the symptoms with non-addictive safe meds (
clonidine, perhaps
benadryl, anti
nausea medicines ) that are not generally considered addictive.
