Suggest Treatment For Shallow Breathing Despite Suffering From Flu

My wife has had flu symptoms for several days. She has had a low fever, for which I give her aspirin and a daytime-nighttime cold pills. I am concerned that her breathing seems shallow and she seems very tired and weak. Should I take her to emergency room, or ride it out? She is 71years old. We have a doctor s apt scheduled for Friday.
