Suggest Treatment For Severe Tonsillitis While On Co-amoxiclav

I am currently diagnosed with tonsillitis and have been prescribed co-amoxiclav for 7 days since pen v didn't really remove the infection completely. This morning I noticed that some of my lymph nodes (neck) were swollen and I woke up sweating but it was probably due to the fact that I had too many layers on me. I'm on my eighth dose of co-amoxiclav and the tonsil swelling still hasn't subsided. I'm also having difflam as a gargle. Is any of these a cause for concern or are they normal when it comes to tonsillitis?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns. As per your complain it seems that you have an inflammation in throat secondary to infection and it is leading to swollen tonsils causing Tonsillitis. It can be either due to bacterial or viral throat infection. Swollen lymph nodes are commonly seen along with throat infection or tonsillitis.

As you have started taking antibiotics since 7 days there should have been some improvement by now if it is due to bacterial infection. But if it is due to viral infection antibiotic will not work as they can cure only bacterial infection. I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a throat swab culture can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

As of now you should continue taking antibiotics for a week and also take anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen. You can gargle with warm saline solution. You can chew a Vitamin C pellet daily. You can avoid spicy and hard foods and take a soft bland diet with plenty of fluids. Gargle with antiseptic solution like few drops of betadine in water.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
Dr. Honey Nandwani Arora
