Suggest Treatment For Severe, Right Rib Pain In A Geriatric Patient

My mother is nearly 92 and is having severe pain on her right rib, but it s not near the breast area. She is on Tramadol and heat patches. I cannot get her to go to the doctor. She has not fallen or bumped against anything. This came on over night while she was sleeping. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello! Thank you for writing us here. Well what a possible reason for pain in ribs is costochondritis. It is mainly due to bacterial infection. Heat patches would help the pain and also I would suggest to go for a 7 day course of antibiotics. Amoxicillin would do well and for pain, a tablet paracetamol would be good. She will be alright in a couple of weeks don't worry.
Regards,
Dr Gunjan
