Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In Buttocks

I have had pain from my left buttocks down to my calf for about a year. It is now tingling and feeling numb. My PCP ordered cortisone injection, which helped for about 3-4 days and now the pain has returned as before. I m taking anti-inflammatory, stretching day and night and have not had any improvement. The mornings are the worst with pain. Is there any other treatments, besides surgery, meds, for this debilitating pain?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.

From the description you have given me, it looks like we can rule out any problem with the nerves or the spinal cord.

The muscles in the gluteal region can go into spasm when they are injured.

Such injuries can happen when you try to lift something incorrectly or you fall.

The treatment is to use small doses of muscle relaxants, pain killers and rest.

In my practice usually give Tab Valium 2mg by mouth three times a day, along with Tab Imol twice a day.

You need complete bed rest and you should not try and carry anything heavy.

So you should check with your family doctor if you have any underlying concurrent disease.

Talk to your doctor about trying something like this for about 1 week and see if you are better.

Otherwise we will have to get some x-rays and other scans done.

I hope this helps,

Regards,
