Suggest Treatment For Severe Itching And Dryness Around Mouth

I had a fusion and decompression of the lumbar region last week and I am recuperating at home. I thought I had severe dry mouth from the pain medications but the symptoms are getting worse and my mouth is very red and sore. I also have severe itching around the incision and nothing seems to alleviate it. I am very allergic to pollen and dust and I'm sure it may be a reaction to the medicine. I have stopped taking the oxicodone so hope the other symptoms will go away . if this is thrush is there anything I can take?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you are suffering from Medication induced Xerostomia and redness and soreness in mouth seems to be due to Apthous Stomatitis leading to inflammation inside mouth that is secondary to dry mouth..
Dry mouth can cause thinning of the oral mucosa leading to ulceration and inflammation..

I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like blood tests can help in diagnosis..
Treatment of underlying cause will relieve the symptoms..
As of now you can start gargling with a numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine to relieve the symptoms.
You can also take a multivitamin tablet daily..
You can take anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen..
Suck ice and do cool water rinses..
Avoid spicy food..

Itching around incision site can be due to infection in the incisions and for this consult your treating surgeon and get evaluated and he can advise you oral and opical antibiotics for relief..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe itching and dryness around mouth. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to wash area with cold water and salicylic acid face wash.Use tea tree oil dipped in cotton swab for fastening the healing and prevent discoloration. You will get relief in 1-2 weeks, if your condition keeps on persisting visit dermatologist once and start treatment after proper prescription. Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight. You should take antifungal medications and apply nystatin suspensions on it.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
